Improvers Musical Theatre Skills Development

If you enjoyed the West End flavour of our Beginners Musical Theatre Course our Improvers Musical Theatre Course builds on the skills learned but with more focus on solo work, duets and trios.

It is really important that you have some previous experience before signing up to Improvers as we wouldn't want you to feel out of your depth. Ideally you will have completed a City Academy Beginners Musical Theatre Class or a singing or dance course. Otherwise places can be booked via an audition or evidence of previous study.

Material will be drawn from the classical musical theatre repertoire with an additional focus on the history of musical theatre. Numbers will be chosen from all eras and styles from Oklahoma to Rent via Wicked as well as from lesser-known musicals to give you a broad understanding of the genre.

Musical Theatre Skills Development

Improvers follows a similar path to beginners but with a higher level of challenge, consolidating and building upon your basic skills. It's fast and fun with lots of laughter, what else would you expect from musical theatre?

Exact content may differ depending on students' needs and course duration, but topics generally covered include:

• Further integration of singing, dancing and acting

• Putting on large ensemble pieces, small ensemble solos, duets and trios

• Exploration of script work / acting through song

• Introduction to fundamental techniques via thorough learning of singing and dance warm up exercises

• Application of those basic techniques to the beginning of a song & dance routine

• Intense learning of vocal material for the showcase - repertoire has included Mamma Mia and The Cell Block Tango amongst others

• Practise of solos song choices

• Further vocal and dance techniques will be taught

• Rehearsing and honing the material for the showcase - with more material will to be added, as it becomes clear as to the progress of the group

• Refining the material

• Final cleaning/dress rehearsal and informal friends/family performance at the end of the final session

Something to Think About

Just as with the beginners course a dictaphone or other portable recording device is needed to record harmony lines etc.(Most mobile phones come with some kind of recording facility - so please check before purchasing anything new).

Bring a folder to class to put any sheet music you are given, and a pencil to make notes on your score.
