Course Description

This acting course offers a thorough and practical introduction to Acting in a fun and supportive atmosphere. There is ample opportunity to practice a range of skills required for acting in the theatre. Focus will be upon one main text throughout the course. However, a variety of other texts will be included.

Acting Skills Development

  • Basic understanding of the principles of core elements of acting
  • Using environment, character and objectives to explore text

  • Basic understanding on how acting choices create spontaneity, emotion and connection to other actors

  • Preparing and presenting improvised and scripted scenes using imaginary spaces

Acting Class Content

Our beginners acting class is designed to develop acting techniques most appropriate for those with little to no acting experience. However, exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but will generally follow this structure:

Week 1 - 4
  • Approaching and enjoying improvisation using body language and movement to communicate a character
  • Using your voice on stage
  • Connecting to your fellow actor
Week 5 - 10
  • Sight-reading a scene effectively

  • Tackling a scene from a play
  • Being truthful in imaginary circumstances

  • Taking on a character

  • Identifying and communicating subtext
Week 11 - 12
  • Engaging with different styles of writing and performance

  • Preparing and presenting improvised and scripted scenes

How our Beginners Acting Class is Taught

In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Acting through:
  • Explanation, demonstration, suggestion, direction, repetition, revision and practising

  • Whole group work / small groups / pair work and solo work to consolidate learning

  • Written material to support practical learning

Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive continual feedback from the tutor throughout the course. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment. At the end of the course your tutor will assess the progress you have made.


Additional Information
Wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a bottle of water is recommended. Scripts will be provided.


Please note: shorter courses (eg. 6 weeks or 10 weeks) broadly cover the same content as 12 week courses.

For 10 and 12 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 3.
For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.

Acting Teacher: Cat Clancy

Credits: Pride & Prejudice, The Hollow Men, Cabaret
Actor, singer and cabaret performer, Cat Clancy has been regularly wowing critics and fellow professionals from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Oscar-winning lyricist Don Black. Best Actress award winner, she has performed on stage and screen from The Ritz to Pizza on the Park. Cat brings all of her experience and acting and performing skills to help you get the most out of acting.

Acting Teacher: David Windle

Credits: The Bill, Hollyoaks, Holby City, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Importance of Being Earnest
David is the consummate acting pro with performances ranging from classic theatre to prime-time TV drama.  Whether it’s bringing Shakespeare to life or acting in the latest Holby City emergency for Saturday night TV audiences, David’s wealth of acting and teaching experience will help you to explore the range of skills and techniques needed to tread the boards with confidence.

Acting Teacher: Ann Ogbomo

Credits: Holby City, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, The Bill, Hardware, Babyfather, The Tempest, Tamburlaine, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew
LAMDA-trained actress, Ann is a highly experienced actor regularly appearing on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 as well as on stage with performances ranging from the Shakespeare classics to contemporary drama. She is also a creative teacher, having designed acting classes and workshops for The Globe and RSC. With her talent and love of acting, Ann is skilled in inspiring and developing new actors.

Acting Teacher: Jake Lyons

TV Credits: Eastenders, Derailed, The Knock
Actor and director, Jake appears regularly on TV soaps and dramas as well as performing at some of the most prestigious UK theatres including Shakespeare’s Globe, Palace Theatre, Lyric Theatre and the Lawrence Batley Theatre. With his Stark Theatre Company, he specialises in directing new drama. He is associate director with The Cambridge Shakespeare Festival directing two full-scale productions every year. Jake is a leading-edge teacher of acting techniques, improvisation and is experienced in developing new acting talent.
