Course Description
This course represents a step change in the skills explored and the challenge to the student over the Beginners Acting and Improvers Acting. Skills taught in Improvers Acting are reviewed and covered in more depth, as well as introducing some new techniques. Students will work with a text set in a particular time in history and learn about the wider historical and cultural context of the play.
Acting Skills Development
- Increased awareness of how to break down text and discover subtext
- Develop the confidence to create characters, understand story, improvise around text
- Increased knowledge of plays
- Developing a personal physical and vocal warm-up
Acting Class Content
The course is designed to develop acting techniques most appropriate for those with some acting experience. However, exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but will generally follow this structure:
Example: 12 Week Acting Course
Each class begins with “Warm Up” exercises and then introduces a different set of acting techniques during every class.
Week 1 - 3
- Further improvisation skills
- Listening and responding
- Trust and responsibility
- Workshop on the themes of the play
- Further cold-reading techniques
Week 4 - 6 (with reference to method acting techniques)
- Further levels in method technique
- Meisner and Stanislavski; emotion in secnes and monologues
- Brecht; ideas and techniques
Week 7 - 9
Weeks 10 - 12
- Rehearsal
- Informal performance
- Appraisal

How Our Intermediate Acting Class Is Taught
In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Acting through:
- Explanation, demonstration, suggestion, direction, repetition, revision and practising
- Whole group work / small groups / pair work and solo work to consolidate learning
- Written material to support practical learning
Additional Information
Wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a bottle of water is recommended. Scripts will be provided.
Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive continual feedback from the tutor throughout the course. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment. At the end of the course your tutor will assess the progress you have made.

Note: Shorter courses (eg. 6 weeks or 10 weeks) broadly cover the same content as 12 week courses.
For 10 and 12 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 3.
For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.

Acting Teacher: Cat Clancy

Actor, singer and cabaret performer, Cat Clancy has been regularly wowing critics and fellow professionals from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Oscar-winning lyricist Don Black. Best Actress award winner, she has performed on stage and screen from The Ritz to Pizza on the Park. Cat brings all of her experience and acting and performing skills to help you get the most out of acting.

LAMDA-trained actress, Ann is a highly experienced actor regularly appearing on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 as well as on stage with performances ranging from the Shakespeare classics to contemporary drama. She is also a creative teacher, having designed acting classes and workshops for The Globe and RSC. With her talent and love of acting, Ann is skilled in inspiring and developing new actors.
