Editing - Final Cut Pro

Editing - Final Cut Pro

Editing across five evenings, using the industry standard software, will reveal this most fascinating discipline within the filmmaking process.

Editing is a core part of the filmmaking process. Our course is a highly practical introduction to the professional editing software Final Cut Pro, ideal for beginners looking for some hands-on experience.

This course is over 5 evenings (one 3 hour class each week).

Who should take this course

Writers, directors, producers, actors, filmmakers, cinema lovers, anyone with an interest in how movies are made and wants to learn how films are put together in the cutting room.

Or anyone planning to make a film – the best preparation for making a film is to have edited one already – learn what to look out for when planning your next shoot.

Course Requirements

There are no entry requirements for joining the editing class, rushes of scenes will be provided, although if you have completed the Film Shoot Weekend either as a film-maker or an actor you should sign up for the Editing Course for the opportunity to put your own film together.

Course Outline

Using the industry standard Final Cut Pro to edit raw rushes into final scenes you’ll learn:

  • Uploading rushes - referring to the logging sheets
  • Managing your workspace - putting out the Bins
  • Cuts and transitions - pacing time and rhythm
  • Thinking about sound and vision separately
  • Re-telling the story - back to the storyboard
  • Filters and looks
  • Music and sound effects
  • Reviewing the work-arounds/amazing moments you employed during the edit and how you’d do it better/make them happen again next time you shoot

What's Next?

The best preparation for making a film is to have edited one already.

Having done the edit and learned what you need to do next time you shoot, the next course to undertake, if you haven’t done it already, is the Film Shoot Weekend.

Learning to make films can only be done by continuing to make films.

Beyond the Film Shoot Weekend lies Film School Sundays - an advanced filmmaking course run over 5 consecutive Sundays.
