Jazz Dance Course Description
Our Beginners Jazz course provides the perfect foundation for any beginner to explore the world of dance. Jazz is a commercial style of dance that is simple and fun to do. The course is designed to introduce basic dance skills to those who have little or no experience. It is a combination of different styles from Musical Theatre to Street Dance to Jazz Dance. Beginners Jazz is a great introduction to dance generally. It helps movement and confidence before taking one of our more specialised dance classes.
Jazz Dance Skills Development
- Understanding the fundamentals of basic modern jazz dance
- Learning about posture, co-ordination and position in dance
- Losing inhibitions and gaining confidence
Jazz Dance Class Content
Example: 12 Week Jazz Dance Course
Every class:
A warm-up and cool down, corner to corner/co-ordination/technical exercises. There is a chance at the end of each lesson to dance your routine whilst the teacher watches, coaches and comments.
Week 1
- An overview of Jazz Dance. Learning the warm-up exercises. Introduction of basic footwork and co-ordination, corner to corner work. Learning a basic routine
Week 2
- Re-cap of previous week warm-up exercises and introduction of turns, steps and basic kicks.
- Re-cap previous routine and add steps
Week 3-4
- Introduction of warm-up to music, corner to corner exercises
- Re-cap previous weeks routine
- Introduction of new dance style
- Learn new routine
- Perform both routines in class end of week 4
Week 5-6
- Briefly review last 2 routines
- Introduction of new style
- Learn 3rd dance routine
- Combine all routines together
- Practice and spacing
Week 7
- Combination /breakdown of all routines
- Student Q&A session
Week 8-9
- Introduction to new style
- Learn 4th routine
Week 10
- Intensive lesson on performance and technicality
- Group work, duos and solos
- Spacing and routine combination
Week 11
Week 12

How Our Jazz Dance Class Is Taught
In this practical approach to the basics of Jazz Dance, students will be taught through:
- Explanation, demonstration, correction, copying
- Repetition, revision and rehearsal to specialised music
- Group and partner work
- Q&A sessions
- Pre prepared notes of course content to be provided if needed and DVDs and videos for research if desired
- Optional visits to optional shows
Additional Information/Costs
Footwear and Clothing
Recommended are trainers/ jazz boots or jazz shoes.
(Specialised stockists such as Gamba Freed and Dancia, which have outlets in and around London can provide appropriate footwear)
Comfortable clothing such as leggings, jazz pants, tight tracksuit bottoms, shorts, crop tops, t-shirts are recommended.
Bring a notebook and pen (optional)
Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive continual assessment from the tutor throughout the course, via verbal feedback, physical mirroring and Q&A. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment. At the end of the course both student and teacher will mutually assess progress made during the course.
There will also be an opportunity to provide feedback through a course evaluation form from City Academy.

For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.
If you book 2 or more different courses at a time, you will receive 10% discount.

Jazz Dance Teacher: Mark Short
Mark Short is a professional Choreographer. He has worked all of his professional life as a dancer working extensively in TV, Theatre and UK Tours. As a Choreographer, Mark has choreographed for artists such as Tina Turner, Ant n Dec and Peter Andre to name but a few. His extensive knowledge of Choreography ranges from street dance, contemporary dance, musical theatre and tap dance. His fun and professional attitude towards teaching has meant his classes are great for helping with fat burn and cardio exercise, as well teaching different styles to students wishing to push their dance skills dance skills further or just having fun learning.
