Musical Theatre Class (Improvers) Description

This course builds on the skills learned in Level 1 but students will start to focus more on solo work, duets and trios. To attend this course you will have completed a City Academy Musical Theatre Class: Level 1, Singing or Dance course. Otherwise places can be booked via an audition or evidence of previous study.

Material will be drawn from the classical musical theatre repertoire with an additional focus to the history of musical theatre. Numbers will be chosen from all eras and styles from Oklahoma to Rent via Wicked. It is also likely that music from lesser-known musicals will be chosen.

Additional costs
Dictaphone or other portable recording device. To record harmony lines etc.(Most mobile phones come with some kind of recording facility – so please check before purchasing anything new.)

Students should bring a folder to class to put any sheet music you are given, and a pencil to make notes on your score.

Musical Theatre (Improvers) Skills Development

  • The further integration of singing, dancing and acting. Depending on course numbers, the course will focus on putting on large ensemble pieces, small ensemble solos, duets and trios.
  • Some development of script work / acting through song

Musical Theatre Course (Improvers) Content

(Example: 10 Week Course)

Week 1
Introduction to basic techniques via thorough learning of singing and dance warm up exercises that will be used every week. Application of those basic techniques into the beginnings of a song & dance routine.

Week 2
Warm-up and further technique teaching.  The material to make up the showcase will be decided upon and intense learning of vocal material begins.

Week 3
Learning of vocal material begins.   Repertoire has previously been: 'Mamma Mia' and 'The Cell Block Tango' amongst others.  There will also be opportunity for solos song choices. 

Week 4 - 8
More techniques both vocal and dance will be taught.  Rehearsing and honing the material for the showcase – with more material will be added, as it becomes clear as to the progress of the group. 

Week 9
Refining the material

Week 10
Final cleaning/dress rehearsal and informal friends/family performance at the end of the final session.

Exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but generally it will follow this structure:


How our Musical Theatre Classes (Improvers) are Taught

Students will be taught Musical Theatre through:
  • Explanation, demonstration and practise
  • Group work and some solo to consolidate learning

 

Musical Theatre Teacher: Vikki Stone (DipRAM LRAM)

Vikki Stone is an accomplished Musical Theatre and Stand Up Comedian. Vikki trained as a singer and singing teacher at the Royal Academy of Music - under the instruction of west-end vocal guru Mary Hammond. She studied Estil Technique (a vocal method embraced by top Drama Schools and Conservatories) under vocal expert Anne-Marie Speed. Her professional career includes credits and awards in; Beauty and the Beast; The Ladies Who Lunch; Oklahoma! and the Last Comic Standing Season 5. Vikki's extensive musical training and passion for the stage creates a brilliant feeding ground for her students to thrive and grow as individuals and performers, whilst having fun at the same time.

Musical Theatre Teacher: Rebecca Wicking

Rebecca trained full-time at the Sylvia Young Theatre School from the age of 11 followed by a 3 year Musical Theatre Diploma at Laine Theatre Arts. Professional credits include: Hair (English Theatre), Rent (The Garrick Theatre), Chess (Royal Albert Hall), Annie Get Your Gun (Union Theatre, Lead singer onboard P&O's MV Aurora.
Rebecca's love and knowledge of Musical Theatre makes both a professional and enjoyable workshop for both Rebecca and her students.

 

Musical Theatre Teacher: Stuart Hickey

Stuart trained at the Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded the Dip RAM for outstanding final performance. Previous to that, he attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Industry Credits include:

: Ensemble/understudied and played Peron in Evita (UK Tour). Ensemble/understudy Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar (Scandinavian Tour). Lead Vocalist in 12 Irish Tennors (UK and European Tour). Watson in Parade (Edinburgh Festival) Tim Gibbs in Our Miss Gibbs (Finborough Theatre). The Wiz in The Wiz (Upstairs at the Gatehouse), Able Pirate Who in Peter Pan (Millfield Theatre) Ensemble in The Wizard of Oz (Hexagon Theatre)
Concerts
: Vocalist in Elton John's UK Tour, Soloist Enchanted Evenings and Glamour Nights (Pitlochry Festival Theatre)
Television
: Heartbeat, Grange Hill, Brass Eye, Behind the Christmas Curtain.



For 10 and 12 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 3.
For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.
