Musical Theatre Dance Class Description
This course is suitable for people of mixed abilities and allows students to focus on one aspect of Musical Theatre in depth. If you want to study Musical Theatre and prefer dance, or feel that your dance needs more work then this course is for you. The repertoire will be chosen from Broadway and West End Theatre. The class is fun and would appeal to all ages. The course will cover performance technique, different styles of dance, co-ordination, strength, flexibility and moves and dances inspired by the musical and film world.
Beginner Musical Theatre Course Content
(Example: 12 Week Course)
All Lessons
Warm-up and cool down at the end. Some floor work will apply with some of the dance routine: Kicks, turns and basic leaps, corner-to-corner travelling steps. Co-ordination and isolation moves involving arms, head and legs. Work on stretching and flexibility.
Week 1-2
- Overview of the musical: breakdown of the story of the musical being learning
- Introduction of corner-to-corner and combinations and other steps
- Work on routine to be performed end of class in 2nd week
Week 3-4
- Development of new routine for another musical
- Technical breakdown of the dance style
- Basic routine taught and added to routine in week 4. Work on personal performance. End of class performance in week 4
Week 5-6
- Introduction of 3rd routine to another musical
- Technical breakdown of the dance style
- Introduction to ‘one on one’ partner work and social interaction in dance. (A basic block of steps necessary to the routine will be taught before partner work.)
- Rehearsal
- Routine to be performed at the end of lesson on week 6
Week 7
- Introduction of 3rd routine to another musical
- Technical breakdown of the dance style
- Basic routine taught/Work on personal performance, spacing and choreography
Week 8
- Focus will be upon assessment: students to perform dances for the teacher and peers. Students get the chance to work in trios, duos and possibly solo for the more confident student.
- Q&A/ Rehearsal
Week 9-10
- Re-cap of previous routines
- Introduction to the next musical and breakdown
- Teach basic routine
- Piece together all routines to create a basic format for a short showcase consisting of all musical theatre numbers
- Work on spacing and peer awareness and working as a group
Week 11
- Breakdown of spacing and staging of all the routines
- Showcase rehearsal, working on correction, copying, revision and personal performance
Week 12
- Re-cap of week 11
- Informal Showcase for close friends and family
Exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but generally it will follow this structure.

Additional costs
Footwear
Men and women: Jazz boots, jazz shoes, and trainers. Work shoes or high heels not recommended unless teacher requests for certain routines.
Clothing
Baggy clothes and tracksuits, tights and leotards or jazz pants are recommended. Work clothes, jeans and tight fitting clothes are not suitable.

How our Musical Theatre Dance Classes are Taught
Students will be taught Musical Theatre through:
- Explanation, demonstration, correction, copying, repetition, revision and rehearsal
- Learning in large groups, trios, duets and solos
- Support in taking notes through revision, written notes, DVD, video or demonstration
- Explanation, demonstration, correction, copying, repetition, rehearsing, revision
- Whole group work/small group/pair work in class to consolidate learning
- Support in taking notes, as to record learning and to enable students to practice / revise steps between classes or in class free time.
- Q&A sessions
- Pre prepared notes of course content to be provided if needed and DVDs and videos for research if desired
- Optional visits to see other groups or shows in and around the London area
Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive continual assessment from the tutor throughout the course, via verbal feedback, physical mirroring, and Q&A. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment. At the end of the course both student and tutor will mutually assess progress made during the course.

Musical Theatre Teacher: Mark Short
Mark Short is a professional Choreographer. He has worked all of his professional life as a dancer working extensively in TV, Theatre and UK Tours. As a Choreographer, Mark has choreographed for artists such as Tina Turner, Ant n Dec and Peter Andre to name but a few. His extensive knowledge of Choreography ranges from street dance, contemporary dance, musical theatre and tap dance. His fun and professional attitude towards teaching has meant his classes are great for helping with fat burn and cardio exercise, as well teaching different styles to students wishing to push their dance skills dance skills further or just having fun learning.
For 10 and 12 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 3.
For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.
If you book 2 or more different courses at a time, you will receive 10% discount.
