Musical Theatre Singing Lesson Description
This course is suitable for people of mixed abilities and allows students to focus on one aspect of Musical Theatre in depth. Students will focus on the singing aspect of Musical Theatre. There will be a greater focus on singing technique, than on the combined course and will involve both solo and group material.
The history of musical theatre will be explored and the musical canon will be drawn from the classical musical theatre repertoire. Musical numbers will be chosen from all eras and styles from Oklahoma to Rent via Wicked. It is likely that music from lesser-known musicals will also be chosen.

Musical Theatre Singing Skills Development
- A basic understanding of some of the workings of the vocal mechanism
- Achieve a good quality vocal performance whilst using the voice in a safe and healthy manner
- A good understanding of integrating singing and acting
- Application of some basic “acting through song” techniques
- Public performance
Musical Theatre Singing Class Content
Example: 6 Week Course
Week 1:
Introduction of basic techniques via thorough learning of warm up exercises that are done every week. The class will be divided into voice types (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass etc) and learning will begin of a song with harmonies that will go on to be in the showcase at the end of the course. Students are encouraged to bring in song ideas for duets/solos for the following week.
Week 2:
Warm-up and introduction of further technique teaching. The material to make up the showcase will be decided upon and intense learning of vocal material begins.
Week 3-4:
Rehearsing and honing the material for the showcase. More material will be added, as it becomes clear as to the progress of the group
Week 5:
Cleaning the material
Week 6:
Final cleaning/dress rehearsal and performance at the end of the final session
Exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but will generally follow this structure.

How our Musical Theatre Singing lessons is Taught
In this practical class, students will be taught Musical Theatre through:
- Explanation, demonstration and practise
- Group work and some solo to consolidate learning
Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive regular verbal feedback from the tutor throughout the course
Additional Costs
Tap shoes (not essential as ordinary hard sole shoes will suffice, but proper tap shoes would be an asset.)
A Dictaphone or other portable recording device is recommended in order to record harmony lines etc. (Most mobile phones come with some kind of recording facility – so please check before purchasing anything new.)
Students should bring a folder to class in which to put any given sheet music and a pencil to make notes on the score.

Singing Teacher: Pippa Duffy (DipRAM, BAHons)
Pippa Duffy is a professional Singer and Actress. She has a degree in Drama from Bristol University after which she studied Musical Theatre on the Royal Academy of Music where she was taught by Mary Hammond. At the Royal Academy Pippa trained in the Estil Technique (a vocal method embraced by top Drama Schools and Conservatories) under vocal expert Anne-Marie Speed. Acting credits include, TV: Casualty BBC1, Mouth To Mouth BBC3, Pete Vs Life Channel 4. Theatre includes: Tracy in 'Tracy Beaker the Musical' National tour, 'Once We Were Mothers' Orange Tree Theatre, 'Pride and Prejudice' National tour. Pippa's lessons build a strong technical foundation to improve vocal ability and confidence with a strong emphasis on acting through song.
