Beginners Salsa Class Description
This course provides an introduction to all of the fundamentals of Salsa. By the end of the course students should be confident enough to get onto the dance floor. This course will lay the foundations by going step-by-step through all the essential moves and breaking them down so they are accessible to everyone.
Salsa Skills Development
- Understanding the origins of Salsa and its historical and cultural context.
- Understanding the fundamentals of the most popular Salsa styles: Cuban and Cross-Body Lead.
- Learning about dancing posture, elegance and sensuality in Salsa.
- Performing a short and basic Salsa choreography
- Becoming familiar with the Salsa dance community and attending a Salsa Club

Introduction to Salsa, basic steps, openings and couple hold
Week 2
Improved basics, rocking steps, co-ordination of arms and introduction to turns
Week 3, 4
Footwork, right turn and left turn for men and ladies, combinations in couple, Separados, Dropping Back
Week 5
Introduction to Swivels and cross-over swivels, Change places
Week 6
Introduction to Casino Style, Casino turns
Week 7
X-body basic moves in couple, Sencillo with 3/4 turn, Back breaks with full turn
Week 8, 9
Cross-body basic moves in couple, Open-break, Shoulder leads, Sombrero
Week 10
Salsa social dancing, Dance floor combinations
Week 11
Enriched footwork, Gir´on, Papillon
Week 12
In-And-Out Walk Configuration, Miami-style taps, Enredala
Exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course. The length of your course will also affect the material covered but will generally follow this structure.

How our Beginners Salsa Class is Taught
The course will be taught through:
- Explanation, demonstration, correction, copying, repetition, revision and break-down of Salsa moves
- Practicing to Salsa Music at different speeds (use of educational music with counting)
- Solo and couple work in front of the mirror
- Whole group work to consolidate learning
- Specific exercises to overhaul the most common difficulties
- Enriching ladies’ and men’s style separately
- Hand-out of written material to learn about the Salsa social code
- Recommendation of music to listen to
- A “Debut” night in a Salsa club
Footwear recommendation:
Ladies
Court shoes with a small strong heel - NO stilettos, sandals, platforms or trainers.
Men
Leather-soled shoes with a slight heel - NO trainers.
Feedback to Confirm Progress
There is continual assessment from the tutor throughout the course, via verbal feedback, physical mirroring and Q&A. Each student will be given individual advice and the chance to dance with the teacher for tailored tips. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment. At the end of the course the tutor will assess your progress and discuss which level of course to take next.
