Classical Singing Lessons Description

This is a singing course aimed at those who are interested in Classical musical and the vocal techniques for this genre.

Students will largely focus upon group repertoire, however, will often be asked to sing alone, to check correct application of techniques.
Repertoire will be chosen from classical works, mostly English to begin with, but some basic Italian Arias will be touched upon.



Classical Singing Skills Development

  • An understanding of some of the workings of the vocal mechanism
  • An understanding of how to achieve a good quality vocal performance whilst using the voice in a safe and healthy manner
  • Application of some basic acting techniques

Classical Singing Course Content
(Example: 10 week course)


Weeks 1
  • Students will be taught a warm-up, vocal exercises, basic posture and alignment
  • Repertoire will be a basic English Classical song

Weeks 2

  • Work will continue on first song and further vocal techniques will be explored

Weeks 3

  • Students will be encouraged to sing the first song song/other vocal exercises individually and will receive feedback to check progress. Another song may be introduced depending on time.

Weeks 4

  • Work on the second song will continue and further introduction to technique. The students will also be introduced to basic Italian pronunciation to prepare for upcoming classes

Weeks 5 - 7

  • Students will work on songs from the ‘24 Italian Arias’, emphasising technique and pronunciation

Weeks 8 - 9

  • Students will choose one of the songs to focus upon individually and classes will have a masterclass feel.

Weeks 10

  • Practice and performing one's song.

How our Classical Singing Lessons are Taught

Students will be taught singing through;
  • Explanation, demonstration and practise
  • Group work and some solo to consolidate learning

Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive regular verbal feedback from the tutor throughout the course.

Additional Information / Costs
A Dictaphone or other portable recording device is recommended in order to record harmony lines etc. (Most mobile phones come with some kind of recording facility – so please check before purchasing anything new.)

Students should bring a folder to class in which to put any given sheet music and a pencil to make notes on the score.

Classical Singing Lessons Progression


Exact course content may differ as it is often tailored to the students taking the course.
The length of your course will also affect the material covered but will generally follow the same structure.



Singing Teacher: Jennifer Peers

Australian soprano, Jennifer Peers, graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2001 with a Bachelor of Music (Voice).  She then continued her study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts completing a Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre) in 2004.  List of credits includes: Peaches in Jerry Springer the Opera at the Sydney Opera House, Opera Australia's national tour of My Fair Lady and Frieda/Betty in Sunday In The Park With George for the Q Theatre.  She originated the role of Minnie Davies in the premiere of Australian musical The Hatpin, and is also featured on the cast recording. 

 

For 10 and 12 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 3.
For 6 and 8 week courses you are welcome to join up to Week 2.
