Pop & Rock Singing Lessons Description
This is a fun course that draws on material from 5 decades of Pop and Rock, so there is something for everybody. This course is suitable for complete beginners, and for those with some experience. Students will be taught in groups, but will often be asked to sing alone to check progress.
Pop & Rock Singing Skills Development
- An understanding of some of the workings of the vocal mechanism
- An understanding of how to achieve a good quality pop/rock vocal performance whilst using the voice in a safe and healthy manner.
- Application of some basic microphone techniques.
- Public performance
Pop & Rock Singing Course Content (Example: 10 week course)
Weeks 1-2
- Learning some basic singing techniques through warm up exercises. Application of those basic techniques to learning a pop song together usually stating with something 50’s like Elvis Presley.
Weeks 3
- Continue work on previous week’s group song and a second one will be introduced (In the past Van Morrison's ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ has been used.)
Weeks 4
- Recap of first two songs and a third song introduced (previously Abba's ‘Dancing Queen’ has been used.)
Weeks 5
- Working on a more complex group number and individual progress check
Weeks 6
- Recap of the three songs. Students are invited to choose one of the three songs to perform individually in front of the class.
Weeks 7-8
- Students will learn two more pop/rock songs, plus further techniques. They will also be introduced to using a microphone correctly.
Weeks 9
- Selecting song(s) from the course to perform and honing the material.
Weeks 10
How Our Pop & Rock Singing Lessons are Taught
- Explanation, demonstration and practise
- Group work and some solo to consolidate learning
Feedback to Confirm Progress
Students will receive regular verbal feedback from the tutor throughout the course.

Additional Information/Costs
A Dictaphone or other portable recording device is recommended in order to record harmony lines etc. (Most mobile phones come with some kind of recording facility – so please check before purchasing anything new.)
Students should bring a folder to class in which to put any given sheet music and a pencil to make notes on the score.

Singing Teacher: Alex McNamara
Born London. Alex trained as a junior at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, went on to gain a BA Hons degree in Drama from Middlesex University, and finally completed Postgraduate training at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in 2002.
Alex appeared in the London West End production of WE WILL ROCK YOU at the Dominion Theatre from April 2005 - October 2007, covering and extensively playing the villain Khashoggi and performing live with Brian & Roger of Queen on numerous occasions. In 2008, Alex was a featured vocalist and drummer for the British International Motor Show at ExCel London: sharing a stage with the likes of Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Blondie, Deep Purple and Jools Holland; Alex most recently supported Bombay Bicycle Club (Best New Band, NME Awards 2010) as a backing vocalist for their London dates at the Union Chapel, Islington.

Audrey II in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and Prospero in RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET (Upstairs at the Gatehouse), Mr Jefferson/The Man in RENT (Garrick Theatre, West End), Eddie/Doctor Scott in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (Civic Theatre Chelmsford), Benny in ABBA GOLD (UK & international tours).
