Immerse yourself in our five-day Ballet Intensive and learn classical ballet, ballet history and terminology and excerpts from famous ballets. You will also gain experience of being 'en Pointe'.
You will begin each day by building your strength, stamina and flexibility with Pilates based exercises and stretches, before a ballet barre and centre practice. This will help you learn ballet terminology and hone your technique. Additional classes of 'Pointe' work, specific focus classes and a contemporary class, to experience how classical ballet has influenced other dance forms, will all be part of your day. Afternoon sessions will be spent learning Classical Ballet repertory such as Swan Lake, Sleeping beauty and Giselle.
We suggest that those looking to take this Intensive Ballet Course have completed a Beginners Ballet Class or have relevant experience.

Classical Ballet with repertory from some of the best known ballets
In the first session, you will have an in-depth introduction to Classical Ballet. Each exercise, both on and off the barre will be broken down and repeated. The focus will be on strength, flexibility and muscle mobility. You will have a brief introduction to Pointe and get to know some of the historical background of classical ballet.
Build on your barre and centre exercises with a focus on balance, posture and coordination. A specific focus on pirouettes will be added and a continuation of the introduction to pointe work. The afternoon will offer a brief anatomy discussion followed by repertory class.
After your morning technique session, you will focus on pirouettes and a continuation of the introduction to Pointe work. The afternoon will come to a close with some historical background focussed on the repertoire you have been learning so far.
After your morning technique session and Pointe work, you will take part in an introduction to Contemporary dance masterclass. Focussing on another dance style will provide you with an insight into alternative dance styles whose roots come from Classical Ballet. The afternoon will offer a talk regarding injury prevention followed by repertory class.
The summer school program comes to a close with a review of the repertory you have learned so far. You are welcome to invite friends and family to join us for an informal showing and a chance to discuss your next steps with tutors and City Academy’s Head of Dance.
All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
