Musical Theatre - Concert Company

Musical Theatre - Concert Company

City Academy’s Concert Company returns in 2017 following its acclaimed production of ‘Songs For A New World’ last Autumn, which was attended by Jason Robert Brown Himself!

This musical theatre performance group rehearses and performs song cycles, or concert versions of great musical scores in a central London studio theatre space, with live musicians to a paying audience.

With rehearsals on Friday and Sunday evenings over eight weeks The Studio Company aims to produce excellent Musical Theatre shows for a discerning audience. The performances take place on a Sunday, with a matinee and an evening show. The process will be intense and rewarding, but the commitment is not so heavy that it can’t fit easily around your normal working life.

Every cast member must audition for their place in each show, and all cast members will have heavily featured roles. The cast will work with a Director, a Musical Director and a Choreographer, all with extensive experience of professional Theatre, to produce a show to be proud of.

Who Can Join?

PERFORMER DEVELOPMENT

Whilst this course culminates in fully staged performances, the show itself is not its sole aim. By picking shows and composers with great harmony based work performers will hone their ability to part sing and blend within a small group during the process.

The shows will include at least one full solo opportunity for each performer, and so we will be focusing on acting through song in masterclass style workshop rehearsals on individual pieces in front of the group.

This is a great chance to learn not just from your director, but from your fellow cast members. All the creative team are industry professionals and will ensure you learn and hone new skills as well as playing to your existing strengths.

AUDITIONS

The cost of an audition slot is £5.

You can book and pay for your audition by clicking here. You will be given an hour’s slot and within that hour you will sing your audition song for our creative team. Auditions will not be performed in front of the other auditionees. Your harmony ability and musicality will be tested in your audition and you may be asked to wait until the end of your slot in order to sing in harmony with other auditionees.

All potential members will need to prepare one contemporary musical theatre song of their choice that demonstrates their performance skills, and also one contrasting song which should be by Stephen Sondheim. Songs should demonstrate vocal range and acting ability, be it comic or serious in tone, as suits your strengths. Please bring your own printed taped or filed sheet music for our pianist. Please do not bring any songs longer than three and a half minutes long.

THE SHOW

For this project we will be focusing the work of the Musical Theatre composer Stephen Sondheim; his most famous works include ‘Into The Woods’, ‘Follies’, ‘Company’, ‘Merrily We Roll Along’, ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Assassins’ as well as many more. Sondheim is considered by many to be the greatest living composer in the genre, if not the greatest Musical Theatre composer ever.

The combination of his complex musical lines and incredibly insightful, witty and emotional lyrics mean that there is so much for a performer to get their teeth into. The show itself will be carefully crafted as a song cycle, with solos, small group numbers and of course some iconic full company numbers. With such a superb and vast body of work to pick from this promises to be a very special showcase for the performers chosen to join the cast.

THE PERFORMANCE

The performance will take place in the Shoreditch Town Hall in the heart of the vibrant Hoxton and Old Street area. This intimate studio space is perfect for shows of this kind, ensuring our audience great proximity to our performers and an excellent view and quality of sound from every seat in the house.

The show will be fully staged, choreographed and lit and performed with our Musical Director playing live.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will take place each Friday and Sunday evening for eight weeks from Friday 31 march at the following venues:

- Fridays: The Arts Theatre
- Sundays: The Townhouse

See: Musical Theatre venues

The cast will not be required for every single rehearsal.

No Venue

All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
