They are coated with a protective mucus that protects them from the natural friction that\u00a0occurs when our cords vibrate, each time we speak or sing.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure you\u00a0keep your cords hydrated, it\u2019s important to drink around two\u00a0litres of water a day - this way you\u00a0avoid any irritation, redness or swelling of the cords that can arise. Despite the fact that it's\u00a0full of vitalising nutrients, flushes toxins from our bodies\u00a0and\u00a0is just\u00a0generally refreshingly\u00a0wet,\u00a0H2o is one of the most underrated refreshments of all time - and it is also one of the best ways to look after the health of\u00a0your vocal cords.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>2. Sh! <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shush.\u00a0<\/span>If your voice is tired and you are\u00a0experiencing vocal issues, the more you rest your voice the better.<\/p>\n<p>Talking and singing utilise\u00a0the same apparatus, so having a chat\u00a0isn\u2019t always\u00a0as effortless as it seems. When you find that your vocal cords feel\u00a0bone\u00a0dry and super swollen, it makes sense\u00a0to channel your inner buddha, live completely in silence for a few days and zip it for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re ready to let rip again, it\u2019s a good idea to warm up for the sake of your vocal health, just as you would prior to hitting the footie pitch or tearing up the treadmill. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help you to strengthen and gain control over your voice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Carrying out the\u00a0exercises mentioned below before you sing will hopefully\u00a0avoid injury and loosen up your muscles, maximising vocal performance as you get\u00a0your mind and body ready to sing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a focused breath and then exhale, while you keep your shoulders and chest low and relaxed.<\/li>\n<li>Do the same as you hold an \u2018s\u2019 sound while you breathe out.<\/li>\n<li>Release the jaw of tension by massaging your face just below the cheek bones.<\/li>\n<li>Blow raspberries to make you lips trill, going up and down your scale, and surrendering any withheld muscular stress around the mouth area.<\/li>\n<li>Practise your tribal calls with some tongue trills, rolling out a steady \u2018r\u2019 sound as you vary your pitch, and do the same with some \u2018oos\u2019 and \u2018ees\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Buzzes and sirens will improve sonority, while a gentle hum creates a gentle tickling vibration in the lip and nose area, setting you up perfectly for breaking into song.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>3. Steam<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re in an office or a studio, the world can be a dry place thanks to the installation of air conditioners, heaters and dehumidifiers. The best and most direct way to get moisture straight to your cords is by steaming, keeping your voice supple.<\/p>\n<p>You can buy steam inhalers online or go down the good old fashioned route of a bowl, a towel and a kettle of boiled water.\u00a0Regular steaming ensures your minimise swelling and the mist\u00a0keeps your vocal cords hydrated and healthy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>4. Steer clear of smoky environments and food irritants<\/h2>\n<p>While some of us dream of emerging from a\u00a0haze\u00a0on stage, smoky atmospheres should be avoided where possible, especially before a performance.\u00a0Cigarettes and singing don\u2019t mix all that well as nicotine causes the generation of superfluous mucus and results in a loss of vocal power, versatility and range.\u00a0It is also an irritant which can make you more prone to sore throats and coughing, which over time will\u00a0thicken your vocal cords and create serious vocal issues.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, acid reflux symptoms can irritate the throat\u00a0as well. Our stomach uses\u00a0hydrochloric acid that is about ten times more corrosive\u00a0than lemons to break down food,\u00a0so it\u2019s important to\u00a0keep\u00a0PH levels stable with a balanced diet\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">and intake of booze, avoiding irritants\u00a0such as spicy foods, citrus foods and fizzy drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>5. Straws aren\u2019t just for blowing bubbles into your milkshake, they are for carrying out semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, of course.<\/p>\n<p>This type of breath training isn't as\u00a0complicated as it sounds, in fact it actually is when you hum through your straw and blow bubbles into your milkshake, or chosen beverage.<\/p>\n<p>The point here is to \"reset and free the voice\" and \"stretch and unpress\" your vocal cords, as per academic research by vocal scientist, Ingo Titze.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0professor at the University of Utah and executive director of the National Center for Voice and Speech, Ingo\u00a0believes\u00a0it teaches people to talk and sing from higher up, rather than from deep within their chest.<\/p>\n<p>This is called having a forward resonance, and can be trained by lip trills, tongue trills, vocal bilabial fricatives (made holding a \u2018v\u2019 sound between the lips), humming, and phonation into tubes or straws. It\u2019s also likely to make your voice stronger over time, and more difficult to lose, as you\u00a0programme the larynx to relax.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>6. Exercise and sleep\u00a0to keep your voice healthy<\/h2>\n<p>Keeping in physical shape is always a good idea, but even more so when your entire body is your instrument. The ability to stand for long periods of time with great posture, a strong diaphragm and a good set of windpipes is vital for\u00a0singers to get the most out of their voice.\u00a0Hitting the gym,\u00a0team sports, or seemingly gentler activities like\u00a0swimming and yoga help to stimulate endorphins, improve muscularity and increase cardiovascular strength, as well as your breathing stamina.<\/p>\n<p>You will likely see results in the form of better mental clarity and physical energy levels, improving your overall output from attention span to the quality of sound.\u00a0On the other end of the spectrum, fatigue can also\u00a0affect singing muscles such as\u00a0the larynx.\u00a0A\u00a0lack or an overabundance of sleep can\u00a0result in decreased vocal performance, and lead
