City Academy’s Soul & Gospel Singing Lessons - Intermediate focus on building further knowledge of Gospel and Soul repertoire whilst focusing on solo work and technique development in vocal dynamics, harmony, interpretation and rhythm. Soul music's roots lie in gospel and rhythm & blues - but it was artists like Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin who really made the world sit up and listen. By the 1960s the Tamla/Motown labels were releasing hit after hit from the likes of The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson Five and many more.
This intermediate level singing class digs deeper into the performance elements of these genres. You will develop more confidence in solo, ensemble and singing in harmony as well as further understanding of the origins and development of these vibrant singing genres. The course will culminate in an informal showcase of individual solos and group ensemble.
What will be taught on Soul & Gospel Singing Lessons - Intermediate?
The course will cover a range of carefully selected material to ensure it is challenging, varied, and above all, enjoyable.
Course content will include:
- Developing a deepened knowledge of the soul and gospel genre.
- Extensive vocal warm-ups and introducing more advanced singing technique and technical terminology.
- Exploring challenging ensemble work with a focus on harmony, musicianship and dynamics.
- Solo Masterclasses - focusing on acting through song and musicianship skills with personal feedback about vocal technique, performance and style.
- Performing in an informal showcase at the end of the course.

Entry requirements and level of this course?
This course is suitable for those who have completed an Improvers course and/or prepared to sing from memory.
Students must possess an understanding of their voice, have previous singing experience and confidence in singing solo.
The ability to hear notes and sing them back as well as good spoken and written English is required.
How will I be taught?
Intermediate courses are taught within groups and also incorporate solo masterclasses. Each week will begin with a thorough vocal warm up before going on to develop and apply key vocal techniques and approaches to develop your confidence and singing skills.
Students will have the opportunity to sing a broad range of repertoire each week. Your voice will grow in strength and flexibility and you’ll gain a sense of control and confidence when singing. Best of all, you’ll have a lot of fun, and meet like-minded new people.
By the end of the course, what will I have achieved?
Students will have:
- Developed confidence in their vocal ability, improving range and tone.
- Gained further insight into their individual instrument, movement and vocal health.
- Explored key elements of their chosen genre i.e. improvisation, lyrical interpretation, musicality, interaction with accompaniment.
- Demonstrated learnt technique within an informal sharing to friends and family on the final session.
After I complete this course, what are the next steps in my training?
Students may wish to repeat Intermediate within a nother genre to further their performance and musicianship skills.
