Whether you want to write fiction or non-fiction, our creative writing class will help you find your individual voice – through practical exercises that boost your confidence and unlock your creative potential in a safe and supportive environment.
You’ll work practically to produce short pieces of content and develop a critical awareness of others’ writing styles. Creative Writing for Beginners is ideally suited to writers wishing to focus on long-form prose.
CREATIVE WRITING COURSES FOR BEGINNERS - COURSE CONTENT
For our six week beginner Creative Writing course - there will be regular writing prompts designed to encourage, inspire and stimulate critical thinking. You should also expect to do writing exercises at home, as practice is the only way to improve.
- Short exercises to inspire ideas.
- Group work in class and one-to-one support throughout.
- Weekly assignments and provocations to write.
- Analyse the key components of classical dramatic narrative.
- Responding to others’ creative writing and group discussion.
- Producing the full story: Plot, structure, creating characters and narrative.

You will be encouraged to share your work in class and learn from one another. You will also receive friendly feedback throughout the course. Students must have a good level of basic written English, as the course won’t focus on grammar or vocabulary.
OUR APPROACH
The skills acquired aren't just useful for aspiring authors; Creative Writing is a great skill to develop business and personal writing, along with communication skills and confidence. At City Academy we offer two different length courses - a 1 day course and a 6 week course. They both provide an introduction to Creative Writing by exploring structure and form in various writing exercises. Our 6 week course based in central London will cover the content in more detail and therefore you will receive more individual and group feedback.
