Hollywood actor DeObia Oparei has starred in the iconic hits of our times, such as HBO's Game Of Thrones, Netflix's Sex Education and Marvel's LOKI, and cinematic blockbusters such as ALIEN III, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Jumanji: The Next Level and Guy Ritchie's thriller, Wrath Of Man.

It's this ambitious drive and passion that DeObia brings to his soul stirring Performance, Truth and Power Workshops. 

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

In Performance, Truth and Power, you will learn how to

  • How to come alive for the lens, by coming alive to the world behind your eyes.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The curious, courageous and ambitious. Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear. It's the willingness to feel the fear and do it anyway. In performance, truth and power, DeObia has mapped out a space where you are allowed to explore, fail and fly.

Performance, truth and power is a call to action for each and every one of us. To own our power. Commit to being in action with our artistic goal, and to set our career intentions with conviction, passion and purpose. The workshop (not the toilets) will be a gender neutral zone.

All gender and non-binary expressions are welcome. Participants preferred pronouns will be heard and respected. Actors are also encouraged to explore the material in non-traditional as well as traditional ways.

ABOUT DEOBIA OPAREI

From fractured beginnings that included childhood poverty and homelessness, DeObia's unconventional path to Hollywood success is a stark lesson in making a way out of no way. 

Having decided against going to drama school his sheer force of will, talent and character led him into the hallowed halls of The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal National Theatre, and the Royal Court Theatre - where he honed his technique and refined his craft. Leading him to work alongside the industry's most successful movie stars, Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge), Johnny Depp (Pirates Of The Caribbean), The Rock (DOOM), Ryan Gosling (The Gray Man). 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORKSHOP

This is a safe space where you will be guided to un-mask vulnerabilities and connect to a truth that can only be you. 

Auditions and self-taping

You will learn the best camera angles to tell and sell your character's dramatic, comedic or tragic cinematic story. You will learn how to break down the beats of a scene to create a compelling character and a thrilling self-tape. You will also be shown how to make inventive creative choices to make you and your work stand out.   

An actor prepares

Scripted scenes and monologues will be given out beforehand. You will be expected to know your lines from day one, and will be asked to make choices on the character and material you've chosen. Those choices may be flipped around or tossed out in the workshop. Come flexible and prepared to be challenged.

No Venue

All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
