Cinematography Courses

Our part-time evening Cinematography courses are a fun, creative and practical introduction to cinematography for beginners, teaching you how to combine the art of storytelling with the discipline of filmmaking.

You will learn the key principles of making a motion picture with a distinct focus on styles of shooting, and the handling and use of a DSLR camera - the tool of choice for independent, freelance and even big budget backed filmmakers today.

You will receive training from an industry professional throughout, switching between a classroom setting and a central London studio, enjoying the opportunity to analyse film techniques and experience commercial environments.

This hands-on filmmaking course will encourage you to explore both the creative and technical elements of creating a narrative on screen. That includes how to set up a camera, framing scenes, understanding how lens choices affect your shots, and how to make the most of your camera's settings - from controlling ISO, aperture, shutter speed and white balance to understanding depth of field and more. Before getting into the practical side of things, you will cover everything you need to know about how to work with different quality of light, high key, low key and modulated lighting setups.

At the end of our course, you will be equipped with the skills and confidence you need to get out and about shooting stories for yourself.

Cinematography Courses Content

This short course will cover:

• Camera operation: learn to use DSLR cameras, widely used in the film industry
• Lighting: explore different lighting techniques and how to use them when shooting a story
• Equipment: become familiar with the gear you need to make your own motion picture and how to use it
• Shoot different angles and learn how to frame scenes
• Learn how to capture emotions in scenes and display moments on screen
• Gain the skills and confidence to operate a camera and become a director of photography
