On our Writing for Children's Books Workshop - Level 2 you will have the chance to kickstart a full-length piece of writing for children, whether it’s a picture book or a middle grade novel. Our course covers approaches to writing for children of all ages.
At each session, different writers will have an opportunity to present their work and receive helpful and constructive comments from award-winning children’s author and tutor Andrew Weale, as well as the rest of the class.
Writing for Children's Books Workshop - Level 2: course content
This writing course will provide you with a formal understanding of developing ideas from the ground up, with opportunities to share your work in progress with a group of like-minded writers.
- Story shaping using a new or pre-existing idea
- In-depth character development
- Explore different grades and genres, including Fantasy
- Dialogue, pacing, and how to hook the audience
- Learn about current market trends and ways of approaching an agent
- Approaches to redrafting
- Mentorship from a working professional and award winning writer Andrew Weale.

For those who have completed our Writing for Children course, or have some previous writing experience
Styles
Write for children of any age, in any genre
You will be encouraged to share your work in class and learn from one another. You will also receive friendly feedback throughout the course. Students must have a good level of basic written English, as the course won’t focus on grammar or vocabulary.
Our Approach
The skills acquired aren't just useful for aspiring authors; Creative Writing (including for Children) is a great skill to develop business and personal writing, along with communication skills and confidence. The course is based in central London and you will receive more individual and group feedback.

No Venue
All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
