Designed for complete beginners, this practical course offers a friendly and supportive introduction to piano playing, music reading and theory. Guided by a professional piano teacher, you’ll develop essential techniques while learning to play simple melodies, chords and pieces. You’ll also explore improvisation and create your own melodies and accompaniments, with opportunities to play solo, in duets and as part of an ensemble. Taught in small groups in central London, the course combines shared learning with individual feedback on posture, dexterity, musicality and progress. Every student will have their own keyboard to use during each session. Reading Music Develop the skills to read basic music notation and apply it confidently at the keyboard. This course is suitable for complete beginners to music, or to those with experience in a different instrument but are new to piano. Do I need to bring anything? Keyboards and sheet music will be provided for all students, although it may be useful to bring a binder or portfolio to store your sheet music. Should I wear anything in particular? It's a good idea to wear clothes you're comfortable in and that allow you to sit up straight. Note that it is more difficult (although not impossible) to play piano with long nails, and so you may want to consider removing nail extensions before your lessons. Do I need a piano at home to practice on? Having your own piano or keyboard to practice on will improve your progress, and your instructor will give you structured recommendations for practice outside of class. However it is not a requirement, and different amounts of practice outside of class will be accommodated by your instructor. If I do want to purchase a keyboard, what should I buy? Feel free to ask your instructor about this, but the ideal beginners keyboard will have 88 keys and be weighted or semi-weighted. Some affordable options are the Yamaha P45 or P145, or the Roland FP10. What kind of pieces will I learn? Your instructor will choose pieces based on the level of the class, although if you have particular pieces or styles you would like to learn always feel free to talk with your instructor after class! After finishing my course, should I repeat Piano Beginners, or move straight to Level 2? This is dependent on how comfortable you are with the skills and music theory you have learnt during the course. Generally speaking, most students who practice outside of class are ready to move to Level 2, however if you're uncertain then speak to your instructor at the end of your course. Want to learn more?
