The Dance Summer School has been designed to expose you to a wide range of dance techniques, providing you with a concentrated foundation in dance.
The classes have been carefully formulated to enable you to develop a variety of technical and creative skills. You will learn a broad and diverse array of dance styles, taught by leading industry professionals at one of our centrally located dance studios.
We aim to provide you with the capability, artistry and confidence to take your dancing to the next level.
The Course
The Dance Summer School Course is a premier course established by City Academy to offer a comprehensive insight into the experience, expectations and demands of full-time dance training over 5 days. Based at one of London’s premier dance studios the course runs over five consecutive days.
Each day you will train intensively in specifically selected core dance styles, as well as skills of strength and flexibility.
Dance Summer School Course Content
The Dance Summer School Course is a premier course established by City Academy to offer a comprehensive insight into the experience, expectations and demands of full-time dance training over 5 days. Based at one of London’s premier dance studios the course runs over five consecutive days.
Each day you will train intensively in specifically selected core dance styles, as well as skills of strength and flexibility. As an example, one day might consist of classes in:
- Ballet
- Contemporary
- Contact Improvisation
- Jazz
- Commercial
- Choreography & Repertoire
When
Takes place over 5 consecutive days
Training
You will receive intensive and immersive dance training - you will definitely break a sweat!
Level
This course is suitable for the absolute beginner, or those looking to discover other dance genres on a foundational level
Styles
You will get an introduction to multiple dance styles and techniques
Course content
The timetable for each day offers a dynamic range of technical and creative classes:
BALLET
Aims to develop: Increased coordination and balance. Improved body awareness through posture and alignment. Increased flexibility and development of core strength. Ease and grace of movement. Strength and articulation of the feet. Structure, discipline, and musicality. Ballet provides the necessary classical and technique base upon which all other dance styles can be built upon.
CONTEMPORARY
Aims to develop: Dynamics and travelling through space. Techniques of swings, drops, accents, length, release and contractions. An understanding of motion through the dropping of weight and fullness of movement. Improved stamina through repetition Stability, coordination and articulation to dance with clarity. Contemporary dance enables you to play with musicality and experiment with movement
JAZZ
Aims to develop: Techniques of kicks, turns, leaps, isolations and mobilisation. Cardiovascular work. Stretching and strengthening. Increased stamina and core strength. Learning and repeating specific sequences to improve and create rhythm and musicality, memory, coordination and performance.
COMMERCIAL
Aims to develop: A basic understanding of different styles of Commercial dance. These could include: Street, Hip-Hop, Diva, Breakdance and House.
IMPROVISATION
Aims to develop: Confidence to let the body lead your movement. Explore the connectedness of the parts of the body. Experiment with relating to other dancers in the space (contact improvisation). Understand gravity, counterbalance and develop an awareness of personal kinesphere.
STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY
Aims to develop: Increased flexibility through good stretching practices, body conditioning, core strength, posture, and alignment and injury prevention.
CHOREOGRAPHY & REPERTOIRE
You will learn samples of choreography and routines from the core dance styles as well as classic repertoire from past and current choreographers.
