Musical Theatre Studio Company

The Studio Company is the apex of our musical theatre curriculum, an intensive and passionate performance group centred around our regular full cast productions. We are a vibrant, sociable group who share a love for musical theatre and performance.

Work with a Director, a Musical Director and a Choreographer, all with extensive experience in professional theatre, to produce a show you will be incredibly proud of. Each production features an extensively trained cast and takes place at a central London theatre. Move through rehearsals, dress rehearsals and finally, an invaluable taste of the London stage.

Our Musical Theatre Studio Company is a vibrant, passionate group with a rich history of producing blockbuster shows. Previous productions include Chicago, In the Heights, Lend me a Tenor, Sweeney Todd, Urinetown, Into The Woods, Company, Avenue Q and The Producers, all of which have played to sold-out audiences and rave reviews. When you join the company you become part of a supportive family, who support each other through the process all the way to the stage.

OUR CURRENT PRODUCTION: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

We are currently working towards our winter production of A Little Night Music. This is a beautiful show based on Ingmar Bergmans' film Smiles of a Summer Night.

The story explores the tangled web of affairs centred around actress Desirée Armfeldt, and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. A Little Night Music is an intimate, fun tale of relationships and truly the most perfect show to return to the original roots of the Studio Company.

Our previous Sondheim shows have included Company, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd and Assassins but this will be the first time that we tackle the concept of immersive seating at the amazing Bridewell Theatre.

Accompanied by a small band in a more minimalist setting, with a stripped back vision focused on highlighting the individual and ensemble performance, this show is a thrilling challenge for talented performers and our way of celebrating the works of the late Stephen Sondheim and sharing this wonderful piece with our audience.

A Little Night Music is full of hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret and desire and contains Sondheim's popular song, the haunting "Send in the Clowns."

Our Current Creative Team: A Little Night Music

Director: Victoria Gimby

Musical Director: Ben Levy

Choreographer: Philip Michael Thomas

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR VICTORIA GIMBY

Sondheim was a master of storytelling. He was known as a giant of musical theatre, who always managed to find just the right turn of phrase and combination of notes to express a feeling perfectly. His death last year sent shock waves through the world. At City Academy we all felt his loss greatly, and we knew we wanted to pay our own tribute this year.

I am honoured and delighted to be directing Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. This is one of my favourite Sondheims, filled with everything you could want from a night at the theatre; romance, comedy, cracking characters and beautiful music. The music is stunning, featuring 'Every Day a Little Death' and the heartbreaking 'Send in the Clowns'. We can't wait for you to come and join in on our 'Weekend in the Country' (another extraordinary song) as we take A Little Night Music to the stage.

How do I join?

The group rehearses and performs in prestigious London theatre spaces. Rehearsals take place on Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings over two months to produce shows of the highest calibre possible. The Studio Company is strictly by audition only, with new auditions held to form a new company for every production, rather than for an ongoing group.

Step 1: Audition - £5

To audition, book a £5 slot here. Your audition will be a video of you performing a Sondheim piece of your own choice accompanied by a backing track or piano. Information on how to submit this video will be emailed to you after you have booked your slot. Deadline to submit your audition is Wednesday 10th August at midnight.

Step 2: Callbacks - Free

If you are successful after our creative team has reviewed your audition, we will be in touch to give you information about attending our callbacks. There is no cost at this stage. Our recalls will be held on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th August in the evening.

If you have not been selected, we will be in touch to suggest how you can continue your journey. We encourage students to further develop their skills on our Musical Theatre Improvers course, even if this is for the second or third time.*

Step 3: Casting - Lead or Ensemble

After our callback process has ended, you will be notified within a week as to whether you have been selected as a lead role or an ensemble role. The number of leads and ensembles depend on the production we are running, and they are both integral to the success of the show.

Memebership Payments

After being successfully cast you will be either a Lead (£695) or Ensemble (£595) member. In order to secure your role on the production, you must book your spot on the course within a week of being offered a role. We offer two separate payment structures, full price payment or instalment options.

No Venue

All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
