Gabriel Akamo

Gabriel Akamo

Gabriel Akamo is a Nigerian-British poet, actor, facilitator, and creative producer based in London.

Drawing on his background in both theatre and Philosophy, his writing currently explores faith, relationships, and his overlapping identities. He released his debut poetry pamphlet, At the Speed of Dark, with Bad Betty Press in May 2020.

He has worked with numerous organisations including Rich Mix, Roundhouse and WIRED Next Generation. He has been commissioned by institutions such as the Southbank Centre, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Academy of Arts, and Gresham College where he was also a guest speaker at the Lord Mayor’s Annual Lecture in 2020.

Having worked in education and the arts since 2013, Gabriel is experienced with designing and delivering both group workshops and one-to-one sessions in creative writing, theatre, and performance for people of a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

His background also informs his approach to facilitation. Inspired by Plato’s dialogues, Gabriel aims to create engaging sessions that highlight the unique power of each person’s natural voice in a dynamic and conversational, yet rigorous and introspective manner.

He has been a Trainee Facilitator on the Barbican Junior Poets programme, and led both one-off guest sessions and longer courses for organisations such as Emergency Exit Arts, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Yard Theatre, and the Wellcome Collection’s Saturday Studio Programme.

Gabriel is a proud alumnus of the Barbican Young Poets, Roundhouse Poetry Collective, and National Youth Theatre, and a former Roundhouse Resident Artist with Spit the Atom Poetry Collective.
