Julia Cheng

Julia’s work as a creative director and choreographer has been presented internationally. Her critically acclaimed choreography on Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club (directed by Rebecca Frecknall, with original cast featuring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley) was the winner of 2022 Stage Debut Awards. It was also nominated for the 2022 Olivier Award (Best Theatre Choreography).

More recently, Cheng was Movement Director/Choreographer for Wils Wilson’s version of Macbeth at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and for an opera double-bill for the Royal Opera House in London.

As Creative Director of House of Absolute, her dance work Warrior Queens premiered at Sadler’s Wells in London in May 2022. BroadwayWorld.com described it as, “An electric, delicious exploration of identity”. In 2020 House of Absolute won a two-year creative residency with The Philharmonia Orchestra. Julia is a judge and mentor for BBC Young Dancer Competition, mentor for Breakin’ Convention (the UK’s largest Hip Hop Festival), 2024 Associate Artist at The Gulbenkian Theatre (Canterbury) and a proud Patron of Next Generation Youth Theatre in her hometown of Luton.
