Matthew Coulton

Hailing from Yorkshire, Matthew trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. His work as an actor and deviser includes Theatre By The Lake, Chester Storyhouse, a No. 1 tour with Leicester Curve and Rose Theatre Kingston, a tour to Ukraine with Night Train Theatre as well as several immersive, experimental and fringe productions, and BBC TV, BBC Radio 4, and BBC World Service.

He performs as John Keats for Keats’ House, Hampstead & The Keats Foundation, contemporary poetry with the Live Canon Poetry Ensemble, and plays the clarinet.

Matthew is a recipient of Art Council England’s DYCP grant award for 2021.

As a physical theatre specialist, Matthew’s work includes Complicité (The Magic Flute, dir. Simon McBurney), English National Opera (The Winter’s Tale, dir. Rory Kinnear), and as a choreographer/movement-double for Timothy Spall. As a puppeteer, his work includes Lyric Hammersmith / Pins & Needles, several tours with Slot Machine Theatre, and R&D with Blind Summit.

Matthew is a full member of the Movement Directors’ Association. His work includes the Off-West-End 2020 Award Nominated productions of Partenope (Jacksons’ Lane), Moby Dick (Brockley Jack), and My Other Self (Cockpit Theatre). He is an Associate Artist with So It Goes Theatre (a New Diorama Emerging Company 2020), Movement Director for Pendley Shakespeare Festival, associate tutor at Guildford School of Acting (University of Surrey), and regularly teaches Lecoq technique at The Actors Centre.

Alongside Linn Johansson, Matthew is co-founder of Artistic Rebellion, an interdisciplinary UK/Swedish devised theatre company. Their work has featured at The Barbican (Fertility Fest 2019), and UN Rights of the Child Festival (Varberg, Sweden). Their production of Made From Love debuted at Camden People’s Theatre in January 2020. Matthew’s other work as theatre-maker / producer includes This Might Be It (Theatre N16, 2016), and The Studio Festival 2014-2016 (RCSSD).
