Learn to act for television and film during this creative summer course for 14-17 year olds. The course is held in central London at Westminster Kingsway College.*
You’ll learn to make memorable on-screen characters and be bold in front of the camera, with the help of expert actors.
This summer course is a safe space to learn new things, be creative and have fun. Over five action-packed days you’ll build your confidence and technique
in front of a camera, create a character, prepare for auditions and record a dramatic monologue.
Over the course of the week you will:
TV and film acting technique. Casting technique.
Five consecutive full days in the summer holidays
Act for camera, learn the language of the industry, work with a director, and find out how to audition.
DAY ONE: DISCOVER TV AND FILM
We’ll set the scene with an overview of the roles on TV and film sets, and learn the main differences between screen acting and theatre acting. You’ll get to grips with new screen acting techniques, learning about relaxation, concentration and points of attention in front of the camera.
DAY TWO: DEVELOPING A CHARACTER
A key part of screen acting is the relationship between the camera and the eyes. You’ll learn tricks to make the most of this, as well as how to use your imagination to create a realistic character. There will be practical sessions in front of the camera with video playback and friendly feedback as a group.
DAY THREE: ON SCRIPT
Get ready to break down a real film script. You’ll learn how to interpret a text to help you go deeper into your character. During the final part of the day you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice in front of the camera.
DAY FOUR: THE AUDITION
Learn what to expect and how to prepare for auditions. You’ll take part in special sessions with a real casting director and practise a commercial casting. The day’s sessions will run through a range of practical scenarios to give you confidence in future auditions.
DAY FIVE: THE FINAL PIECE
On the last day will bring together all the techniques you’ve learned and focus on what’s next. You’ll record a dramatic monologue to take away with you for your future studies or career. The session will finish with a discussion about the next steps on your journey into acting, with practical tips and advice.
