Learn to sketch the human form in motion in our dedicated art studio in Central London, under the guidance of professional art practitioners.
Artists throughout history have not just used the human figure to elevate their work, but also used the human form in motion to create a deeper visual narrative within their work. Using the inspiration of Artists such as Degas, you will be learning how to capture movement from a live dancer.
You'll focus on understanding form and structure within the figure before exploring a multitude of approaches to present motion, gesture and movement within our drawings.
Class Content
Our Life Drawing lessons are ideal for those with little or no experience in drawing the human body, or those who want to refresh their technique:
- Learn and practise correct proportions.
- Work on observation drawing.
- Practise various marks to pencil and charcoal creating movement quickly.
- Understand structure and mass within the figure and how we can use this within our drawings.
- Learning how to capture gestures, and with it, movement with our figurative drawings.
- Expand your knowledge on classical inspired figurative drawing.
- Dive into expressive markmaking presenting form and movement in a number of different techniques.
- Practise using gesture, movement and form to present a visual narrative.
- Using visual understanding of form, to be able to compose drawings from imagination.
Equipment
Just bring your enthusiasm, and willingness to unleash your creative voice.
Level
Beginners and above. Some experience is favoured.

No Venue
All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
No Tutor
No need to bring anything to our Art classes - we supply everything!
City Academy's art studio base at the Arts Theatre is fully equipped with everything you need to get creative. You'll have access to charcoal, paints, pencils, pastels, ink, paper, easels, brushes, mobile lighting and a wide range of props to suit your chosen class.
