Our Dance Theatre and Performance course is aimed at trained dancers wanting to explore and perfect their storytelling abilities through movement.
This course will free up your creative practice and enhance your improvisation capabilities whilst maximising your character range as an dancer/actor.
You will expand your creative vocabulary learn to express your own unique qualities through characterisation, acting technique exercises and choreographic challenges used by the dance theatre industries leading creatives. The industry wants risk takers, well-rounded performers who can make clear and definite character choices, which in turn will make their creative/rehearsal process more fruitful. Use this course to learn how to offer that and most importantly to inspire the industry to keep coming back to you for your creativity time and time again.
Dancers with no previous acting experience are welcome.
DANCE THEATRE CONTENT
On this course you will:
- Explore and practice different acting techniques.
- Learn the tools to take an in depth look at character.
- Use various choreographic techniques and exercises to create movement relating to character and story.
- Use research source material (Plays, Photography, Film etc) as creative inspiration.
- Create a dance theatre piece consisting of at least 3 scene that implements the character and movement material.
- Warm up and build strength with ballet and contemporary technique classes.
- Learn repertoire from leading dance theatre companies.
Level
Trained dance experience is necessary. No acting experience needed.
What to bring?
Relaxed dance clothes, a towel, notepad, pen. Trainers or shoes that can be danced in.
COURSE OVERVIEW AND SHOWCASE
Throughout this dance theatre course a short contemporary and ballet class will alternate each week as a warm up.
There will also be the opportunity to create your own solo pieces and also work as a group using a mix of unique choreography to curate a performance that you will present in an in-studio, informal showcase at the end of the course. You will also be taught repertoire from leading companies to put into practice the techniques learnt along the way.
This performance course is based on the practices and working knowledge of actor/dancer Richard Winsor who has over 20 years experience at the top level of the dance theatre industry. Using film, play text, performance techniques and even photography for creative learning and inspiration, this course will give you a new way of approaching storytelling dance performance and leave you in prime shape to audition or create freely once you’re offered the role.

No Venue
All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.
No Tutor
Our 5 day Dance Foundation course is ideal for those looking for more intensive training and wishing to build a solid foundation in dance technique. Gain the confidence to pursue future dance training.
