Creative Movement and Performance

Course Content

The course is based on a method used by physical and occupational therapists, actors and dancers called 'Laban Movement Analysis' which is a way to describe, visualize, interpret and document human movement. You'll discover elements of this practice through:

  • Moving with Others - learn to move with, and interpret the movement of others, make contact and collaborate as a group
  • Choreography - devise original choreography through play and exploration
  • Creative Workshops - draw inspiration from photography, art and music, and explore ways to develop movement phrases in a space
  • Performance - A sharing of work in the final week to demonstrate the creative and improvised skills developed

    Equipment Comfortable, loose fitting clothing and knee pads suitable for floor work (tutor will advise on at first session), thick socks and a notebook


Joanna Clare is a professional dancer and practitioner with an MA in Movement from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Having studied and taught at some of London's most prestigious conservatories, Joanna now works as a Movement Director and Choreographer.

Joanna welcomes beginners, always adapting dance material to suit everyone in the group.

Creative Movement and Performance tutors

All City Academy tutors are experienced professionals from theatre, film/TV and performance industries. So whilst they're training you they may also be rehearsing for a West End show or working on a movie. We like that and we do believe it makes a difference in class.

Our adult Ballet Summer Schools focus on classical ballet techniques, you will also learn ballet history, terminology and excerpts from famous ballets and experience being ‘en Pointe’.
