Looking to improve your vocal training and perform your singing for an audience? Develop your performance skills in this course through advanced vocal techniques, solo singing and an end-of-course showcase to friends and family. Performing will help gain confidence and technique in your vocal abilities, and allow you to take your training further.

SINGING PERFORMANCE COURSE OVERVIEW

Each student will prepare a solo song of approximately 3 minutes in length, which is worked on throughout the course with the tutor and then performed at the final showcase. Students will be introduced to a broad variety of musical genres through the preparation of two ensemble numbers, also to be performed at the final showcase.

Learn advanced level group-singing techniques including, three part harmony, choral balancing, dynamics and articulations and solo opportunities within an ensemble song.

Students will have the chance to hone their individual technique through regular one-on-one sessions with the tutor on their solo songs. These sessions will be in front of the entire group, allowing everyone to benefit collectively and apply the tutor’s advice to their own processes.

IN THIS COURSE

Students will be taught a range of advanced vocal techniques including:

  • A detailed understanding of vocal anatomy
  • Vocal qualities, including belting
  • Release of tension through postural alignment
  • Effective management of breath and the control of breath pressure
  • Vocal health maintenance
  • Textual analysis of a song and how to deliver a story through music
  • Working with an accompanist
  • Safe vocal projection and unlocking resonance

Some level of singing experience would be helpful but not essential.

Course Content

Week 1

  • Introduction to the course and to the objectives of the week
  • Learn the fundamentals of voice anatomy, terminology and biology
  • Learn what makes a good solo song
  • Learn an ensemble song with your peers

Week 2

  • Prepare your solo song with support from your peers and the tutor
  • Receive feedback on your first ensemble performance, with action points to work on
  • Vocal technique module covering belting

Week 3

  • Individual vocal technique session with your tutor to prepare for your solo song
  • Learn a second ensemble song with your peers
  • Vocal technique module covering breath management

Week 4

  • Individual vocal technique session with your tutor to prepare for your solo song
  • Vocal technique module covering posture

Week 5

  • Learn storytelling through song, understand and interpret song text, and learn how to deliver a performance
  • Submit ideas for your solo performance 

Week 6

  • Final rehearsal and feedback session for ensemble songs
  • Final individual vocal technique session with your tutor to prepare for your solo song
  • Vocal technique module covering vocal health maintenance

Week 7

  • Dress and tech rehearsal for showcase
  • Perform showcase of ensemble and solo songs to an invited audience
  • Course roundup and evaluation
