Our Portrait Photography Course is designed to give you the confidence, creativity and technical know-how to capture striking portraits in both natural and studio settings. From candid and urban photography to fine art and fashion, you’ll learn how to take photos that tell a story, add mood and texture, and stand out in your portfolio. Guided by a professional portrait photographer, this hands-on course blends theory, practice, and live model shoots to help you refine your personal style.

You will work with a model throughout our photography lessons and receive hints and tips to help develop your personal style and build your confidence. Theory lessons are incorporated into the course to help broaden your understanding of Portrait Photography as you develop your skills. Some studio setups will be covered.

New to photography?

Before attending this course you will need a basic knowledge of aperture, camera lenses, shutter speed and ISO including exposure modes. If you’re new to photography, then you may find it helpful to sign up to one of our Beginner Courses first.

Do I need my own camera?

Please bring a mirrorless camera, a DSLR camera or a compact camera with full manual controls, your camera’s manual, a fully charged battery, an empty memory card, comfortable shoes and an external flash (if owned, we can supply them if not).  If you don’t have all of this please don't worry, we can provide all equipment as needed.

Photography Studio in the Heart of Waterloo

Located in the heart of Waterloo, our fully equipped Photography Studio has everything you need to develop your skills, including studio lighting, backgrounds, cameras, tripods, props and more.

Step outside and you are surrounded by brilliant shoot locations, from the Southbank, Leake Street Arches and Lower Marsh Market to Waterloo Bridge, the Thames riverside and the bold architecture of the National Theatre. It is an ideal setting for exploring studio lighting, portraiture, street photography, architecture, composition and natural light, with the city providing a constantly changing backdrop for your work.

Useful Information

Do I need previous experience?
Yes. A good understanding of exposure and confidence in your camera’s manual settings is strongly advised before joining this course. Take a look at our Photography for Beginners course.
What equipment do I need?
You’ll need a DSLR with full manual controls. If you don’t own one, we can provide a camera for use during the class, please request in advance.
What styles of portrait photography are covered?
You’ll explore candid, urban, posed, fine art, and fashion portraiture, working in both natural and studio lighting conditions.
What are the benefits of taking this course?

OUR APPROACH

Our photography classes are designed to fully equip you with the technical knowledge you need to get the most out of your photography, and provide you with projects and exercises to utilise your creativity. The classes are limited to a small size, so our tutors are able to offer you the technical support you need, give you practical hands-on experience and constructive feedback to develop your photography skills.

All of our classes involve focussed, classroom based theory learning, but major on practical exercises. We are committed to offering an enjoyable experience as we guide you through comprehensive technical training and build your confidence as you explore your creative ideas and experimenting with various techniques.

Our cancellation policy depends on the course you have booked.

 

Weekly courses and one-day workshops
Cancel at least 72 hours before your course starts to receive a full refund, course credit or a free transfer to another available date. Cancellations made within 72 hours will receive course credit instead.

 

Intensive courses of five consecutive days or more
Cancel at least 7 days before your course starts to receive a full refund, course credit or a free transfer. Cancellations made with less than 7 days’ notice will usually receive course credit instead.

 

We are unable to offer refunds for missed classes or non-attendance.
